Bronx Legal Services

Bronx Legal Services has been providing high-quality free legal services for low-income Bronx immigrants for over forty years. Attorneys and paralegals provide holistic wrap-around legal services to Bronx residents in the areas of immigration, family, eviction prevention, government benefits, tax, foreclosure, employment, and education law. Bronx Legal Services assists hundreds of low-income immigrants annually with applications for naturalization, citizenship, removal of conditions, renewal/replacement of residency cards, family-based petitions, adjustment of status, and removal defense. Bronx Legal Services represents immigrant survivors of domestic violence, crime, and trafficking in their VAWA self-petitions, Battered Spouse Waivers, and U and T Nonimmigrant Status petitions. Bronx Legal Services also assists clients, including unaccompanied minors, who have been abused or victims of crime with asylum, SIJS, and removal defense.

Bronx Defenders 

The Bronx Defenders provides innovative, holistic, and client-centered services to indigent people of the Bronx, which include criminal defense, family defense, immigration representation, civil legal services, social work support and advocacy. Today, our staff of over 300 represents 35,000 individuals each year and reaches many more through outreach programs and community legal education.

We operate on multiple levels: as a provider of Holistic Defense working one-on-one with clients and families; as a community resource; and as a force for systemic change. We challenge the entrenched problems that drive individuals into the justice system by harnessing the power of community organizing, leadership development, impact litigation, and legislative reform.

Our diverse staff includes criminal, family, immigration, housing, and employment attorneys, social workers, benefits specialists, investigators, community organizers, team administrators, civil legal, parent, and immigration advocates.

BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community.

Emerald Isle Immigration Center 

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center (EIIC) is a not for profit entity created to exercise and protect the privileges and interests of the community; to foster a healthy interest in the civic affairs of the community, to help immigrants acquire US citizenship, and to inquire into civic abuses and seek reformation thereof.

Masa

Masa partners with Mexican and Latino children, youth, and families in the South Bronx to develop strong learners and leaders who fully participate in and contribute to the larger community. We envision a community that is civically engaged, empowered, and educated.

To realize this mission, Masa: Offers a broad range of direct services and referrals; Supports children from 18 months through college and beyond, through each stage of their development; and Promotes civic engagement and community organizing while delivering services.

Mercy Center

Mercy Center is a "haven" in Mott Haven, a community center offering programs and services that empower women and their families to reach their full potential and become agents of change for healthy family living and economic independence.  We promote an improved quality of life by addressing the needs of the whole person in a community of respect, hospitality and non-violence.

At Mercy Center our participants experience the community, skill building and transformation that empowers them to take charge of their future and pursue their goals for an improved quality of life.

New Sanctuary Coalition NYC

New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City is an interfaith network of congregations, organizations, and individuals, standing publicly in solidarity with families and communities resisting detention and deportation in order to stay together. We recognize that unjust global and systemic economic relationships and racism form the basis of the injustices that affect immigrants. We seek reform of United States immigration laws to promote fairness and social and economic justice.

Phipps Neighborhoods 

Phipps Neighborhoods helps children, youth, and families in low-income communities rise above poverty. We work in South Bronx neighborhoods where we can address the greatest barriers to lasting success through education and career programs, and access to community resources.

We’re dedicated to our neighborhoods for the long term, supporting individuals and families as they establish self-sufficiency. Our services create opportunities for people to thrive in every aspect of their lives. We developed a Community Impact model to maximize our ability to provide communities with the resources needed to increase opportunities, strengthen neighborhoods and transcend poverty. This model is marked by four key characteristics: targeted program areas, an integrated approach, a continuous improvement strategy and a geographic focus.

Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and Families

Sauti Yetu is a multi-issue community based organization that works with African immigrant women and families to improve the quality of their lives, strengthen their families and develop their communities. Our direct services and public education provide safe transition into adulthood for immigrant girls, curbs violence in the home and provides life skills and opportunities for immigrant women. With multiethnic and multi-lingual staff, we provide culturally and linguistically responsive social and legal services to victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and forced marriage and support immigrant families negotiate the child welfare system. We offer services in diverse African languages such as Mandingo, Bambara, Wolof, Soninke, Twi, Fulani, and French.

South Bronx United

South Bronx United is a youth development organization serve more than 900 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 19, the majority of whom are from immigrant families.  The organization combines soccer programming with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, health and wellness promotion, leadership development, immigration legal services, and other youth and family support services.  South Bronx United strives to help youth on the path to high school, college, and career success.

Terra Firma

Terra Firma is a project of Catholic Charities New York, The Children's Health Fund, and The Children's Hospital at Montefiore, and is a recognized Medical-Legal Partnership by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership.We believe that all children deserve healthcare and justice. As a nationally-recognized medical-legal partnership, we work to facilitate access to medical care and enhance the role of medicine and mental health in legal services. By promoting the well-being of immigrant children through direct services and advocacy, we seek to strengthen local communities and inform public policy. Terra Firma aspires to empower immigrant children to develop resilience, attain stability, and reach their full potential. Catholic Charities helps immigrants reunite legally with their families, obtain proper work authorization, learn English and civics, and prepare to pass citizenship exams. Catholic Charities also assists immigrants in avoiding exploitation by unscrupulous practitioners by providing correct information and realistic counsel about immigration status.

Violence Intervention Program (VIP)

VIP is a nationally recognized Latina organization. Our mission is to lead Latina victims of domestic violence to safety, empower them to live free of violence and to help them reach and sustain their full potential. We pursue our mission by raising community awareness, engaging in activism and providing culturally competent services. As a non-profit organization we focus on providing services to the community especially to victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and family violence. We offer an array of services including emergency and supportive housing, case management, advocacy, community education & outreach, children & youth services, financial literacy & economic empowerment skills building, and a live 24-hour bilingual hotline (English/Spanish).

Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ)

YMPJ aims to transform both the people and the physical infrastructure of blighted South Bronx neighborhoods and change the systems that negatively impact them. Founded in 1994, YMPJ’s mission is to rebuild the neighborhoods of Bronx River and Soundview/ Bruckner in the South Bronx by preparing young people to become prophetic voices for peace and justice. YMPJ accomplishes its goals through political education, spiritual formation, and youth and community development and organizing. YMPJ’s Center for Community Justice offers direct support to the Bronx community through its immigration, health care access, housing, and public benefits programs.
